This was the Federal Bureau of Prisons' first LEED Silver Federal Correctional Institution (FCI). GRW led the design team for this women's medium-security FCI and minimum-security Federal Prison Camp located near Aliceville, AL. The $188 million project has a gross building area of approximately 624,312 SF, and will house approximately 1,790 inmates.
The complex incorporates many sustainable design features including a fully automated, energy recovering system that reclaims, filters, and treats laundry waste water from washing machines for reuse; reducing both energy and water consumption.
In addition, simulated energy savings for individual buildings ranges from 35-75 percent improvement over the ASHRAE Standard. The vertical bore geothermal heating and cooling systems at the satellite camp buildings, a first for the Federal Bureau of Prisons, is a key energy savings factor.
